How to actually calculate reseller profit

Reseller profit is one of those numbers that feels obvious until you sit down to compute it. Sale price minus cost minus fees minus shipping — sounds easy. But every marketplace structures fees differently, payment processing is its own line item, shipping eats a chunk most sellers underestimate, and the same item can show wildly different margins depending on where you list it.

The calculator above runs the math the way the marketplaces actually charge it: a final value fee on the sale price (sometimes including shipping, like eBay does), a separate payment processing fee on the buyer's total, any per-listing fees that apply, and your real out-of-pocket sourcing cost. The Marketplace Comparison panel surfaces the side-by-side delta so you can see at a glance whether a $40 sweater clears more on Poshmark or eBay before you commit.

A few things sellers consistently get wrong:

  • Fees often apply to shipping. eBay's final value fee is calculated on the total amount of the sale — item plusshipping and sales tax — and Mercari's 10% includes buyer-paid shipping. On a $40 item with $15 shipping, eBay's 13.6% comes out of the full $55 ($7.48, plus a $0.40 per-order fee), not $40. Depop has no selling fee, but its 3.3% + $0.45 processing is charged on item price, shipping and tax.
  • Flat per-order fees bite hard on cheap items.Depop's $0.45 processing fee is nothing on a $100 sale — but it's 4.5% on a $10 sale. If you sell low-priced items, the flat fee structure matters more than the percentage.
  • Promoted Listings aren't in base fee tables. If you opt into eBay Promoted Listings or paid promotion on another marketplace, or Etsy Offsite Ads apply to a sale, you're paying extra on top of base fees on the listings that sell through ads. Always check whether the sale was ad-attributed before assuming the fee number you calculated.
  • Shipping isn't free even if it looks free."Free shipping" means the seller is paying. If you offer free shipping at checkout, that cost comes straight out of your margin and needs to be in the calculator's shipping field.
  • Sourcing cost includes everything you spent. If you drove an hour to a thrift store, paid $5 for the item, and spent $3 in gas plus 30 minutes of your time — the real cost is closer to $15-20 once you value your time honestly. Most sellers track only the cash cost and end up working for less than minimum wage on low-margin items.

Once you have the math right, the bigger question becomes platform selection. Fee deltas of a few percentage points matter less than sell-through differences. A 13% fee on an item that sells in three days beats an 8% fee on an item that sits for six months. Use the calculator to compare margins, but pick your marketplace based on where your specific item actually moves.

FAQ

Common questions

How accurate are these fee calculations?
Fees are pulled from each marketplace's official fee schedule and verified monthly — last refresh 2026-10-01. The calculator uses each marketplace's default rate, so if you sell in a category or price band with its own rate your actual fee can differ by several points: eBay books are 15.3% and athletic shoes $150+ are 8%, Grailed is 6% under $120, and Vestiaire charges a flat $10 under $83.
Does the calculator include shipping?
Yes. Either enter your own shipping cost or use the AI-assisted estimator to get a realistic number based on the item type. If the buyer is paying shipping, check the box and the cost is excluded from your net profit calculation.
Why does the same item show different profit on different marketplaces?
Three reasons: different selling fees (Poshmark's 20% vs Mercari's 10%), different payment processing structures (some marketplaces bake processing into the selling fee, others charge it separately), and different shipping models (some platforms have buyer-paid shipping, others build it into the price). The Marketplace Comparison panel shows the actual delta side-by-side.
Do you store my calculations?
No. The calculator runs entirely in your browser — nothing is sent to a server, nothing is logged, nothing is saved. If you want to save calculations to specific listings, that's what a free Prelo account is for.
Why do I owe more than the calculator says when I get paid?
Almost always one of three things: (1) the marketplace charged Promoted Listings ad fees that aren't in the base fee schedule, (2) you sold in a higher-fee category than the calculator's default, or (3) you forgot to factor in your sourcing cost or shipping label. The calculator handles fees and shipping correctly when the inputs are correct — Promoted Listings ad spend is the surprise that catches most sellers.
Which marketplace has the lowest fees?
For local pickup, Facebook Marketplace is free — nothing beats it. For shipped orders, Depop is now the cheapest on fees for US sellers (no selling fee, just 3.3% + $0.45 processing), with Mercari (10%) and Facebook Marketplace (10%) next, and eBay at 13.6% plus a per-order fee in most categories. Etsy looks low at 6.5% on the surface but stacks a listing fee and payment processing on top until base fees land around 10-12%, more if Offsite Ads apply. The honest answer: pick the marketplace where your specific item sells, then negotiate margin based on volume — fee differences of 3-5% rarely outweigh sell-through differences of 30-50%.
Can I use this for international sales?
The calculator is currently US-focused. International marketplace fees are similar in structure but rates vary by region, and cross-border sales can carry extra fees: eBay, for example, adds a 1.65% international fee if you do not use eBay International Shipping. If you sell heavily across borders, treat the US calculation here as a baseline only.
