Etsy fees explained

Etsy stacks more separate fees than any other marketplace, which is why sellers consistently underestimate their costs here. You pay a $0.20 listing fee per item upfront — and that listing fee renews every 4 months whether the item sold or not, or every time the item sells. Then a 6.5% transaction fee on the item plus shipping. Then 3% + $0.25 in payment processing on the buyer's total. Then if you used Etsy Ads or Offsite Ads (mandatory if you've made $10k+ in 12 months), another 12-15% of the sale. By the time you stack the base layers, an Etsy sale typically costs the seller roughly 10-12% in fees, and 22%+ if Offsite Ads applied. The calculator below covers the base fees — add another 12-15% mentally if you're in mandatory Offsite Ads territory.

FAQ

Common questions about Etsy fees

What are all of Etsy's seller fees?
Etsy stacks more separate fees than any other marketplace: $0.20 listing fee per item (renews every 4 months and on each sale), 6.5% transaction fee on item + shipping, 3% + $0.25 payment processing, plus Offsite Ads at 12-15% if applicable. Before ads, the base fees come to roughly 10-12% of a typical sale; with an Offsite Ads fee on top, 22%+.
What is Etsy Offsite Ads and is it mandatory?
Offsite Ads are Etsy-managed ads on Google, Facebook, Instagram, and Pinterest. If your shop has made $10k+ in 12 months, Offsite Ads are mandatory — you cannot opt out. The fee is 12% of any sale that came from an Offsite Ad. For shops under $10k/year, Offsite Ads are optional with a 15% fee.
Does the listing fee renew?
Yes. The $0.20 listing fee covers 4 months. After that, Etsy auto-renews the listing for another $0.20 (you can disable auto-renew). The fee also re-charges every time the item sells — so a single item that takes 3 sales over 18 months costs $0.20 × 6 listing renewals plus $0.20 × 3 sale fees = $1.80 in listing fees alone.
How does Etsy shipping work?
Etsy offers discounted USPS, UPS, and FedEx labels through Etsy Labels. Most sellers buy labels through Etsy directly. Shipping cost is added to the buyer's total and the 6.5% transaction fee applies to item + shipping combined.
Is Etsy worth it given the fee stack?
For handmade, vintage (20+ years old), and craft supplies — yes, the audience is qualified and willing to pay premium prices. For mass-produced or generic items — probably not, since the fee burden is higher than eBay and the audience is narrower. Etsy works best when the item itself can command 20-30% higher prices than the same item would on eBay.
When does Etsy pay sellers?
New sellers (under 90 days) get paid weekly with a 7-day reserve on each sale. Established sellers can choose daily, weekly, biweekly, or monthly deposits. Funds are deposited via ACH to your linked bank account.
How much does Etsy take from a $100 sale?
$9.95, using the rates in the calculator above: a 6.5% transaction fee ($6.50), 3% + $0.25 processing ($3.25) and the $0.20 listing fee. You keep $90.05 before shipping and what you paid for the item.
What do I need to sell for on Etsy to take home $50?
$55.74. At that price the fees come to $5.74, leaving $50.00. That is before shipping and what you paid for the item, so add both on top to find a price that actually clears $50 profit.
Do Etsy fees take a bigger cut on cheap items?
Yes. The $0.45 in fixed fees per sale is charged at any price, so the total works out to 14% of a $10 sale but 9.95% of a $100 sale. Bundling cheap items into lots is the usual way around it.
