eBay fees explained

eBay's fee structure looks simple on paper and gets messy in practice. For most categories the final value fee is 13.6% of the total sale, plus a per-order fee of $0.40 ($0.30 on orders of $10 or less). Some categories differ: books, movies and music are 15.3%, women's handbags and most jewelry are 15% up to a price threshold, and guitars are 6.7%. Sellers underestimate eBay margins all the time because the final value fee applies to the total amount of the sale, not just the item price: shipping the buyer pays and sales tax are included. If a buyer pays $40 for the item and $15 to ship it, eBay takes its cut on the full amount. Promoted Listings ad fees come out of your payout too if you opted in, and new monthly listings beyond your free allowance cost $0.35 each.

FAQ

Common questions about eBay fees

What is the eBay final value fee?
eBay's final value fee is 13.6% for most categories, applied to the total amount of the sale (item, buyer-paid shipping and sales tax) up to $7,500 per item, and 2.35% on the part above that. Some categories differ: Books & Magazines, Movies & TV and Music are 15.3%; coins, paper money and select collectibles like trading cards and comic books are 13.25%; women's bags and handbags are 15% up to $2,000 (9% above); jewelry is 15% up to $5,000; watches are 15% up to $1,000; guitars and basses are 6.7%; and athletic shoes at $150+ are 8% with no per-order fee. On top of that there's a per-order fee of $0.40 ($0.30 on orders of $10 or less). Promoted Listings ad fees are extra and only apply if you opted into ads.
Does eBay charge fees on shipping?
Yes. The final value fee percentage applies to sale price plus shipping, not just the item price. If a buyer pays $40 for the item and $15 to ship, eBay calculates the 13.6% on the full $55 ($7.48, plus the $0.40 per-order fee), not on the $40 alone. Sales tax the buyer pays is included in the total too. This is the single most common surprise on eBay payouts.
How does eBay payment processing work?
eBay handles payment processing itself, and there's no separate payment processing fee. Instead there's a per-order fee of $0.40 on orders over $10 ($0.30 on orders of $10 or less). There is no extra Stripe or PayPal fee on top — the per-order fee plus the final value fee is the full marketplace cost, unless you sell internationally without eBay International Shipping, which adds a 1.65% international fee.
Is there a fee to list on eBay?
Most casual sellers get 250 free listings per month with no insertion fee. Above that, eBay charges $0.35 per listing. eBay Store subscribers get more free listings. For most resellers, listing fees are effectively zero.
How much does eBay actually cost a seller?
Total all-in fees on a typical eBay sale in most categories land at roughly 14-16% of the buyer's full payment (item + shipping + tax): 13.6% plus the per-order fee, which weighs more on cheaper orders. If you opt into Promoted Listings, add your ad rate on top. The calculator above gives you the base fee number — Promoted Listings are extra and worth modeling separately.
Why is my eBay payout less than this calculator shows?
Three usual suspects: (1) you sold in a higher-fee category than the 13.6% default, (2) Promoted Listings was on and the ad fee came out of your payout, or (3) you forgot the eBay fee applies to shipping too. Cross-check by looking at the fee detail on the order page in Seller Hub.
Can I get verified shipping rates auto-filled?
Yes — that's exactly what Prelo does. The calculator uses an AI estimate. Inside Prelo, the same calculation runs against eBay's real Calculated Shipping rates based on package dimensions, weight, and buyer ZIP, and auto-fills the shipping field on every listing.
How much does eBay take from a $100 sale?
$14.00, using the rates in the calculator above: a 13.6% final value fee ($13.60) and a $0.40 per-order fee. You keep $86.00 before shipping and what you paid for the item. Most categories 13.6% of the total sale plus $0.40 per order ($0.30 on orders of $10 or less). Some categories differ (e.g. books 15.3%, handbags 15%, guitars 6.7%).
What do I need to sell for on eBay to take home $50?
$58.33. At that price the fees come to $8.33, leaving $50.00. That is before shipping and what you paid for the item, so add both on top to find a price that actually clears $50 profit.
Do eBay fees take a bigger cut on cheap items?
Yes. The $0.40 in fixed fees per sale is charged at any price, so the total works out to 15.6% of a $20 sale but 14% of a $100 sale. Bundling cheap items into lots is the usual way around it.
Which takes less on a $50 sale: eBay, Mercari or Poshmark?
On base fees, eBay takes $7.20 (you keep $42.80); Mercari takes $5.00 (you keep $45.00); Poshmark takes $10.00 (you keep $40.00). Mercari leaves you the most. These use each marketplace's default rate from our calculators; category rates, promoted listings and who pays shipping change the real number.
