How to Price eBay Items with Comparables

How Prelo finds similar eBay listings for your item, filters out look-alikes, and suggests a price, plus what that number does and doesn't tell you.

Pricing is where a lot of listing time goes. Prelo prices an item from similar eBay listings. This tutorial shows how it finds them, using a gold-dipped Flora-Hawaii fern, and what the number does and doesn't tell you.

Open Check Comparable Prices

On a drafted item, open Check Comparable Prices in Next Steps. It's free and doesn't use a credit.

Across the top, four boxes sum it up: the average, the median, and the lowest and highest price among the matches.

How the matches are found

  1. Short text searches first. Prelo writes a few eBay searches of two to five words each, naming the kind of item and, where it helps, the maker.
  2. Photo search only tops up. A search by your photo only adds results if there aren't enough.
  3. A relevance check. Listings that are clearly a different kind of product, like coasters that only share a theme, are dropped. The same listing found twice counts once.

Each row shows the condition and the format: Buy It Now, Auction or Best Offer. Compare like with like. An auction's price is the bid so far, not where it will end.

Asking prices, not sold prices

These are active listings, so the prices are asking prices. Treat the number as a guide.

At the bottom is the AI suggested price: the median of the comparable listings. For our fern it was $39, from 20 matches.

If the matches aren't your item, Deep Visual Intelligence searches by photo across the web, not just eBay. That one costs a credit.

Why the search order matters

In an older version, the photo search ran first and filled every slot with Hawaiian look-alikes: coasters, magnets, a matchbook. Those pointed to about $15. With text searches first and the relevance check, the same piece now matches other gold-dipped Flora-Hawaii pieces, priced between about $20 and $75.

The price is yours

Type your price in the editor, under Price. Under it, Get suggested price is a quicker lookup: it searches eBay for your brand and title and fills in the price, with Undo if you'd rather keep yours. It uses one of your Scout lookups.
