eBay Sales and Profit: See What You Really Made After Fees and Costs
Your sales total isn't what you made. Here's how Prelo's Sales and profit page subtracts fees, postage, cost of goods and expenses, and why it says 'net proceeds' until every item has a cost.
Your sales total isn't what you made. Marketplaces take fees, postage and boxes cost money, and so did the stock. This tutorial walks through Sales and profit in Prelo. The shop in the video uses example data.
Where it is
It's in the sidebar under Insights → Sales and profit. The page heading says Ledger. Pick a period: a single month, the year to date, the last twelve months, or a full year.
The statement
The big number is what you kept after fees and costs, out of everything you sold. Under it, line by line:
- Gross sales: what your items sold for, on every marketplace Prelo tracks, not just eBay.
- Platform fees (Estimated): worked out from each marketplace's published rates, as of the date shown. For eBay that's 13.6% plus $0.40 an order in most categories, so your real fees can differ, for example with promoted listings.
- Shipping and packaging: from your expenses: postage, boxes, mailers.
- Cost of goods: what you paid for the items that sold, with a note saying how many have a cost recorded.
- Other expenses: software and the like.
The total says Net profit only when every item sold in the period has a cost. If one doesn't, it says Net proceeds instead: Prelo won't call a number profit until it can stand behind it.
By marketplace
Where it sold splits the period by marketplace. Kept is what reached you after that marketplace's cut. Margin also takes off what the goods cost. Click a marketplace to see it on its own.
Recording expenses
Open Expenses from the link at the top of the page. Add expense asks what it was, the amount, the category and the date, and you can attach a photo of the receipt. Categories are shipping, packaging, software, supplies, inventory bought and other. Inventory bought counts when those items sell, not when you buy them, so nothing is subtracted twice.
Repeating costs are for bills like an eBay Store subscription. Add it once, back-date the start, and every month since is filled in.
The year so far
Over more than one month, Running total gives a row per month and a running total after fees and cost of goods. Export CSV downloads the summary, every sale, expenses, by marketplace and month by month, for your own records or whoever does your books.
